Glutathione in Laboratory Research
Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Its reduced form, GSH, is the dominant low-molecular-weight thiol inside mammalian cells and the electron donor for glutathione peroxidase, and it also drives the phase-II conjugation reactions that neutralise electrophiles and heavy metals.
In controlled laboratory systems it is used as a defined reference thiol for studying cellular redox state.

It is applied in oxidative-stress assays, hepatic-detoxification models, and redox-balance studies, where the GSH:GSSG ratio serves as a standard readout of cellular oxidative state.
